The song need not make any sense in any real way, but the power in the music, words, or movements does what it does because bards learned how to perform in the same way a wizard learned to cast arcane spells or a cleric learned prayers that provide real power. It's exactly the same as a wizard or a sorcerer using arcane words and gestures save that most of their abilities are tied to their performing skills. They know songs and words that act like spells that do the effects they're supposed to do. They are essentially wizards that sing their spells. I've come to the conclusion that bards know magic.
